In this literary and historical jungle it is extremely difficult to find a topic that has not been dissected, discussed and academically proliferated upon ad anfinitum. Nevertheless, today's inquisitive reader is still asking the same questions that have been asked over generations. One of these is for example. 'Was William Shakespeare only an excellent and renowned Elizabethan playwright out to entertain a public yearning for the latest sensationalist entertainment? Or is there a hidden, more subtle, political voice to be interpreted when listening to or reading his words'? This essay will attempt to analyse the possible social, political inferences in Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus with regard to Queen Elizabeth the monarch and Elizabeth the woman. Furthermore, this essay will compare various contemporary political authors with the statements being made in the playwrights work.

Mary Anne Evans (this is the real name of the writer) was a woman of educated, talented and creative mind - a kind of English George Sand. The width of her views and deep knowledge are reflected in her books. The most recognized masterpiece of the literary heritage of the writer was her novel 'Middlemarch'. Eliot showed how a powerful aspiration for good can destroy a hidden weakness; how the complexity of the character negates noble impulses and how moral rebirths comprehend people who were not bad at first.

If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho
16,99 € *
zzgl. 3,00 € Versand

By combining the ancient mysteries of Sappho with the contemporary wizardry of one of our most fearless and original poets, If Not, Winter provides a tantalizing window onto the genius of a woman whose lyric power spans millennia. Of the nine books of lyrics the ancient Greek poet Sappho is said to have composed, only one poem has survived complete. The rest are fragments. In this miraculous new translation, acclaimed poet and classicist Anne Carson presents all of Sappho's fragments, in Greek and in English, as if on the ragged scraps of papyrus that preserve them, inviting a thrill of discovery and conjecture that can be described only as electric-or, to use Sappho's words, as 'thin fire . . . racing under skin.' 'Sappho's verse has been elevated to new heights in [this] gorgeous translation.' --The New York Times 'Carson is in many ways [Sappho's] ideal translator....Her command of language is hones to a perfect edge and her approach to the text, respectful yet imaginative, results in verse that lets Sappho shine forth.' --Los Angeles Times
