Cops vs Thugs - Dual Format (Includes DVD)

Considered by many to be director Kinji Fukasaku's greatest single-film achievement in the yakuza genre, Cops vs Thugs was made at the height of popularity of Toei Studios' jitsuroku boom: realistic, modern crime movies based on true stories taken from contemporary headlines. Returning to the screen after completing their Battles Without Honor and Humanity series together, Fukasaku joined forces once again with screenwriter Kazuo Kasahara, composer Toshiaki Tsushima and star Bunta Sugawara to create one of the crowning achievements of his career, and a hard-boiled classic which is still ranked as one of the best Japanese films of the 1970's. It's 1963 in the southern Japanese city of Kurashima, and tough-as-nails detective Kuno (Sugawara) oversees a detente between the warring Kawade and Ohara gangs. Best friends with Ohara lieutenant Hirotani (Hiroki Matsukata), he understands that there are no clear lines in the underworld, and that everything is colored a different shade of gray. But when random violence interrupts the peace and an ambitious, by-the-books lieutenant (Tatsuo Umemiya) comes to town, Kuno's fragile alliance begins to crumble. Greedy bosses and politicians alike seize the opportunity to wipe out their enemies, and Kuno faces the painful choice of pledging allegiance to his badge and keeping a promise to his brother. Echoing the great crime films of Sidney Lumet and Jean-Pierre Melville, in Fukasaku's world, there's no honor among thieves or lawmen alike, and the only thing that matters is personal honor and duty among friends. Kasahara's shattering screenplay and Fukasaku's dynamic direction support an all-star, ensemble cast to create one of the most exciting, and deeply moving films about cops and criminals ever made. SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS: High Definition digital transfer High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations Original uncompressed mono audio Optional English subtitles Audio commentary by film scholar Tom Mes New video interview with film scholar & Fukasaku biographer Sadao Yamane Sympathy for the Underdog, a new visual essay on Fukasaku's career by Marc Walkow Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Ian MacEwan FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Illustrated collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film

Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, , language: English, abstract: The study provides its reader to have knowledge about J. R. R. Tolkien's personality. After that, it helps his reader to understand the creation of Arda meaning the earth involving Middle-Earth. Moreover, the study mentions Tolkien's sane solutions to the readers who have not read his books, i.e. offering the reader something familiar. It should be stated that Sauron and Melkor have different personalities and Tolkien differentiates the evil within it. J. R. R. Tolkien, one of the most prominent authors of English literature, adds subtle details into his books to make the reader read his books more persuasively. He uses elementary pontifications about literature to go beyond the standard depictions without not crossing the boundaries. In this study, it is pointed out that Tolkien amasses lots of elements into his books. To illustrate, he includes a number of Christian elements in his book. It is highlighted that Tolkien pays attention to the depiction of his evil characters because of the fact that not only he does not want to create something unusual but he also wants to achieve the reader's undivided attention. It is mentioned that Sauron and Melkor have different personalities and Tolkien uses different approaches for each of them. In addition, this study puts the One Ring and Man King's into his aim to highlight Tolkien's style.

"A tremendous book, the biography of a city which charts the multifarious pathways from bacilli to burgomaster." - Roy Porter, London Review of Books Why were nearly 10,000 people killed in six weeks in Hamburg, while most of Europe was left almost unscathed? As Richard J. Evans explains, it was largely because the town was a "free city" within Germany that was governed by the "English" ideals of laissez-faire. The absence of an effective public-health policy combined with ill-founded medical theories and the miserable living conditions of the poor to create a scene ripe for tragedy. The story of the "cholera years" is, in Richard Evans's hands, tragically revealing of the age's social inequalities and governmental pitilessness and incompetence; it also offers disquieting parallels with the world's public-health landscape today, including the current coronavirus crisis.

Sikhs in Continental Europe (eBook, ePUB)

ggf. zzgl. Versand

This book is the third in the trilogy of books looking at the comparatively less-known destinations of Sikh migration to non-English speaking countries. The first one was Sikhs in Latin America, followed by Sikhs in Asia Pacific.Earlier Sikh migration was focused on the British Commonwealth and the USA. Once restrictions were placed on entering the UK, the Sikhs were forced to explore the possibility of migrating to other countries including Continental Europe. The pace of migration picked up in 1970s. Later there were more asylum seekers in the 1980s and 1990s adding to the migration numbers. Some could enter Europe through legal channels, while others found alternative routes as undocumented migrants. Sikhs found employment mostly as unskilled labour but now they have been able to create niche professions such as dairying in Italy and restaurants/bars in Finland. There is now a large second generation who is fully qualified to enter other professions. The author describes how Sikhs have kept up their traditions through 'Nagar Kirtans', Turban, Youth Summer camps, and 'sewa'. There are almost 140 gurdwaras in Europe with a meagre population of less than a quarter million. This book is the third in the trilogy of books looking at the comparatively less-known destinations of Sikh migration to non-English speaking countries.
