Running out of money, Diana Poole is forced to go back to the only work she knows: acting. Her much-loved husband and movie-star mother have died, and now Diana is over thirty-five. In Hollywood that means she might as well be dead. Still, a few key people remember her talent, and she lands a role in a new movie. But an actress should never get her hopes up, especially when she discovers the female lead’s murdered body. Raised in her mother’s shadow, Diana knows people in ´´the business” will go to dangerous lengths to protect their images. When her own life and career are threatened, Diana decides to fight back and find the killer. But unmasking the surprising murderer isn’t that easy, especially when she uncovers what’s real - and unreal - in her own life. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Randye Kaye. Diane Ravitch is the author of the new book, The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn. In her book she chronicles the efforts of school boards and bias and sensitivity committees to edit and shape the textbooks that end up in classrooms. Some examples of this include: omitting the mention of Jews in an Isaac Bashevis Singer story about prewar Poland, changing the expression My God! to You Don´t Mean It, and recommendations that children not be shown as disobedient or in conflict with adults. Ravitch writes that the process has evolved into a practice that excises ´´words, images, passages, and ideas that no reasonable person would consider biased in the usual meaning of that term.´´ President Clinton appointed Ravitch to the National Assessment Governing Board which overseas national testing. She is also a historian of education and Research Professor of Education at New York University and Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. (Broadcast Date: April 29, 2003) 1. When the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, the zoo fell into disrepair, but Jan joined the Polish resistance, and he and Antonina saved 300 Jews by hiding them in their home and helping them escape Poland. Antonina was raised by her grandmother; she studied piano and then moved to Warsaw. She met Jan, who was 11 years older than her, while working as an archivist in Warsaw´s School of Agriculture. Jan became Warsaw zoo director in 1929, and the two married in 1931. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Gilboe. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/089498/bk_acx0_089498_sample.mp3.
